Education is important, and so is money. The sad thing is, they are often interdependent: you can’t get a decent education without money, and can’t get money without a degree (unless you are Bill Gates or a child prodigy). Now, there won’t be a radical change in the world education system anytime soon, but until that happens, students in need of financial aid can try and apply for scholarships through Scholarship Essays.
Scholarship essays, much like the name suggests, are essays that get you scholarships (duh). Most universities require an essay before considering someone eligible for a scholarship. Your essay is crucial – it tells the evaluation committee all about you, your situation, your goals, your achievements, etc. So, it is important that you get your essay right; prove to them that you deserve this scholarship and that you will not let this opportunity go to waste.
Here are some points to keep in mind to make sure you absolutely nail your scholarship essay:
Nobody is just going to hand you money. They need to know why you need it, what is the nature of your financial condition, and what you have been through. Elaborate your life experiences, all the trials, and tribulations that you have been through. But do not exaggerate, or lie, or make your life story sound more Oscar-worthy than Slumdog Millionaire if it’s not. Mention how you have overcome your past hurdles, or how this scholarship would help you overcome them.
Everyone has a dream. It can be as vague as ‘becoming successful’ or as specific as ‘graduating college at the age of 20 with a degree in Journalism and becoming the youngest-ever Editor-in-Chief of Vogue.’
Regardless, the committee reviewing your application must know that you plan on doing something meaningful with your life. How you plan on using the aid they give you, and how you would use it to better yourself or improve the lives of others. They’re investing in you, so, they have the right to know that their money is being put to good use.
To prove that you are capable of achieving things in the future, you must let them know of all your previous achievements, or that you have the potential to do so. It shows the scholarship committee that you did not let these hardships hold you back and you have excelled at certain things. But, there are some hurdles, and hence cannot reach your full potential.
Finally, after stating your life story, the why’s, how’s and what’s, you finally state that to achieve your dream and reach your true potential, you require financial support in the form of a scholarship. Request them to consider you for this opportunity, one that would open up so many doors for you. You could even go into a little detail of these opportune doors.
While writing your essay, you need to convince the reader that they are the only ones that can help you. You have presented all your problems to them, and they hold the power to solve all of them, make them feel like they are your ‘saviour’. Emphasise on how your financial limitations should not interfere with your dreams and your potential.
With all these tips, you should be able to nail your essay and be rolling around in scholarship money before you know it.
