Most universities abroad require you to fill out many forms and complete many formalities before proceeding with the admission process.
Statement of Purpose, Letter of Motivation, and Personal Statement are some confusing terms you may come across when you begin the application process for studying abroad.
These terms may seem similar on a superficial level but play quite different roles from each other. Read on for more information.
A Statement of Purpose or SoP is an application you’re supposed to write to the admissions panel while applying to universities abroad. It showcases your academic background, skills, and career goals you’re aiming to achieve in detail. SoPs tell the university why you have chosen a particular program. Some universities send questionnaires, while some require an essay-like SoP.
A comprehensive SoP must not be more than 1000 words and must contain all relevant information required by the chosen course. It is usually in an essay format with around 7-10 paragraphs of 200-250 words each. Minimal formatting is preferred. No graphics are added anywhere in the document to achieve a more professional outlay.
The Statement of Purpose is a mandatory document for almost all higher education institutions and universities in the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia, among other countries. It is used to determine “goodness of fit” for a particular institution by correlating their notion of desirable students with your achievements.
A good SoP reflects your academic and personal journey and helps the admissions committee gain insight into your experiences and how they have shaped you. It also helps the admissions committee understand your views on life, beliefs, and knowledge about the subject you’re applying for. It also gives the reader a substantial idea of what you envision about your career and life. It is one of the most important aspects of your application process, and it beholds the power to make or break your dream of getting into your desired university a reality.
Here are some sample SoPs created by Minimal Essays!
A Letter of Motivation is a Letter of Introduction attached to another document, such as a resume or a curriculum vitae (CV). Freshers seeking a job or an employee looking forward to changing jobs are supposed to send a Letter of Motivation to introduce themselves.
Also known as a cover letter, covering letter, motivator letter, and motivational letter, a Letter of Motivation is a one-paged letter that explains why the employer should hire you or how you would be the best fit in their company. It must not exceed the limit of 500-700 words as it aims to give the reader a glimpse of who you are and what you’ve done.
A letter of motivation aims to effectively introduce yourself as a skillful and ambitious individual who can be the perfect fit for the institution you’re applying to. It is used to build a strong first impression on the reader and is highly persuasive in intent.
By highlighting key personality strengths and artfully representing yourself, you can overcome shortcomings in application requirements or less impactful SoPs. Most countries with top education opportunities, such as Germany, Sweden, France, Finland, the USA, and the UK, ask for such documentation from international students as part of their application process.
A Letter of Motivation is also written when applying for higher studies abroad. Like job seekers write Letters of Motivation to convince their employers; in the same way, students write Letters of Motivation to convince the admissions committee about why they’re best suited for the course they are applying for.
The personal statement is an essay that allows the admission selection committee to know who you are as a person. It’s your introduction to them–on a personal note. It’s the heart of your application process because you’re to paint a picture of yourself in this statement, thoughtfully yet creatively indicating your personality and priorities.
A personal statement is not an academic research paper about you, nor does it require you to write about your accomplishments. It’s a heart-to-heart conversation that is articulated authentically. It reflects your core personality, highlighting key strengths and weaknesses along with goals and dreams. Unique experiences curate it, be they failures or breakthrough points, that have led to you becoming who you are today.
A personal statement mostly includes a person’s interests, career plans, and future dreams. It aims to showcase the suitability of an individual’s life trajectory to the visions and missions of the institution being applied. A good personal statement is always short and precise and includes a brief overview of a person’s career history and personal life.
Although a personal statement is usually around 500-1000 pages long, different courses have different specifications which they may enlist in their application process. In case of no guidelines, a personal statement must be 1-2 pages long.
The difference between the three kinds of application essays is the purpose you are writing them for. SoP focuses on your achievements and capabilities you’ve acquired over the years; a Motivation Letter is written to make them believe in your capabilities and how you deserve to be in the university you are applying to, while a personal statement is focused on showcasing your core personality.
